Luxurious Lincoln vehicles combine power with elegance, comfort, and above all, safety. Of all the impressive safety features a modern Lincoln has, the most important one is the brakes. Lincoln brakes are outstandingly dependable, but as with any car, they require proper care and maintenance. If you ever experience one of the following three issues, promptly visit your local Lincoln dealer for brake repair and servicing.

You Spot a Brake Fluid Leak

Let’s start with the most dangerous of brake problems. Leaking brake fluid is exceedingly dangerous as it can lead to total brake failure in any car. Brake fluid fills the brake hoses with hydraulic power, which is required to transmit the signal and force that clamps the calipers.

If one of your brake hoses leaks, fluid will seep out, and air will get in, stealing away the hydraulic power. Your brake pedal will start to feel spongy underfoot, which is a signal to pull over at once. To find a brake fluid leak, look under your hood for a yellowy liquid coating the brake hoses, or check beneath your car for this fluid dripping onto the ground.

Your Brakes Aren’t Responding Properly

Even without leaking fluid, it’s possible for a car’s brakes to lose stopping power when they overheat. This danger arises when you’re using your brakes continuously for extended periods of time, such as when navigating heavy stop-and-go traffic or winding along hilly roads with plenty of sharp corners.

When overheating, the resin in brake pads can start to melt. As the resin melts, a tiny amount of gas is released, which creates a thin barrier between the brake pad and the rotor. This barrier reduces the friction necessary to slow and stop your car. If you ever experience this phenomenon, known as brake fade, stop driving at once and allow your brakes to cool back down again.

Your Brakes Are Emitting Strange Sounds

When brakes need attention, they often issue a variety of sounds, which can point to different underlying problems. The most common sound is a high-pitched squealing or squeaking, which usually means one of your brake pads is on its last legs. This noise is designed to draw your attention.

A metallic grinding sound that puts your teeth on edge probably indicates a completely worn-out brake pad. In this case, metal is grinding directly on metal, damaging your rotor discs. Grinding might also mean a foreign object has gotten caught in the calipers and is trapped there.

How Your Lincoln Dealer Inspects Your Brakes

It’s difficult to properly examine your own brakes as you need to raise the car and remove all the components. When you take your car in for servicing, the technician at your local dealership will remove the wheels, rotors, brake pads, and calipers to inspect each part. They’ll also examine your brake hoses and check that your brake fluid is still in good condition.
