alternator

Alternators have been installed in cars for many years. They grew out of the need for a system to provide electrical power to the increasing number of electrical systems in cars. Your Lincoln’s alternator supplies all of your car’s electrical power but will eventually wear out. When this happens, it’s time to see your Lincoln dealer for an alternator repair. These are a few problems that show your alternator is failing.

Signs You Need an Alternator Repair by Your Lincoln Dealer

Broken Rectifier

Your alternator produces usable electricity for your car through a complex conversion system. The alternator is powered by the movement of the crankshaft. This mechanical energy spins the alternator, and the spinning motion causes the magnets in the center of the alternator to produce magnetic energy. This magnetic energy is siphoned off by the stator and converted into AC.

The final step in the process is to convert AC to DC for your car’s systems. This conversion is the responsibility of the rectifier. This tiny component efficiency converts AC to DC and sends this power through the electrical system. A damaged rectifier will prevent this conversion, and your car’s system will shut down as it can’t use AC. We can replace the rectifier to fix this problem.

Failed Alternator Fuse

The alternator has a fuse attached to it to protect it against any electrical issues. This fuse can blow either due to age or an electrical spike in the system. Depending on the cause of the fuse’s failure, the alternator may shut down, or it might become less efficient at producing power. If the alternator shuts down, your car’s systems will also fail in less than an hour and your car will stop.

If the alternator becomes less efficient, you’ll hear squealing noises as the alternator struggles to produce power and spins faster. The faster spinning movement increases the pressure on the alternator and can result in further damage. We can test the alternator fuse and replace a blown fuse in minutes. We’ll also test the alternator for any additional signs of damage.

Worn or Damaged Alternator Connections

The power generated by your alternator must be supplied to your car’s electrical systems. This requires a network of connections and wires that spread through your car and carry electricity. Rust and metal fatigue can damage the connections to the alternator. The slight movements felt in the engine bay as your car moves can gradually loosen these connections.

Loose or damaged connections will generate electrical problems and possible damage to various systems in your car. Our technicians will test the electrical connections and wiring, then replace any worn or damaged parts.
